Crystal care has two separate parts: physical care, which protects the mineral, polish and colour, and symbolic cleansing, which some people use as part of a personal ritual. Keeping those separate prevents a metaphysical practice from accidentally damaging a stone.
The safest default: dry, gentle cleaning
If you are unsure of the mineral, treatment, coating, glue or fracture stability, use a soft dry microfiber cloth. A clean soft brush can help remove dust from clusters and textured specimens.
Do not assume a crystal is water-safe
Mohs hardness alone does not determine water safety. Some minerals can dissolve, rust, tarnish, release unwanted compounds or become damaged along fractures. Dyed, coated, glued or composite pieces may also react differently from untreated material.
Selenite/gypsum, many calcites, Pyrite, Malachite and some porous or metal-bearing minerals deserve particular caution around water. If the material is uncertain, avoid soaking.
Quartz varieties
Many untreated quartz pieces tolerate brief contact with clean water, but that does not mean every jewellery setting, glued piece, coated crystal or highly fractured specimen should be submerged. Check the individual product's care guidance first.
Sunlight can fade colour
Prolonged strong sunlight can fade or alter the appearance of some coloured minerals. Amethyst, Rose Quartz and Fluorite are commonly kept away from long periods of direct sun when colour preservation matters.
How to store crystals
- Wrap softer stones separately so harder minerals do not scratch them.
- Keep polished points from knocking against each other.
- Use a stable stand for spheres.
- Keep moisture-sensitive or metal-bearing specimens dry.
- Keep potentially hazardous minerals away from children, pets and food areas.
Optional symbolic cleansing
If cleansing is part of your personal practice, the lowest-risk methods are usually those that do not physically alter the stone: intention setting, placing the crystal in a quiet dedicated space, or brief indirect moonlight away from dew and moisture. These practices are symbolic; they do not change the mineral's physical properties.
Be cautious with smoke, salt and soil
Smoke can leave residue, salt can scratch or chemically affect some materials, and soil can introduce moisture or abrasion. None of these methods is universally safe for every crystal.
Never make crystal water with an unidentified mineral
Do not ingest crystal-infused water unless the material and method have been independently established as safe. The simplest safe rule for decorative crystals is to keep them out of drinking water.
