Raw and polished describe how a crystal is presented, not proof of authenticity or treatment status. Choose raw for its texture and formation, or polished for a finished surface and shape. Read the material disclosure and condition notes in either case.
Raw vs polished: which is easier to display?
Judge the actual resting position. A raw point may need support; a polished sphere always needs a secure holder. A tower or freeform should have its base shown rather than being assumed stable because it was shaped.
Choosing for your space or gift
For a collection focused on natural forms, compare raw faces and matrix. For a frequently used desk, choose a piece and support that fit outside the working area and do not require repeated rearranging.
Raw crystals
- Show natural crystal faces, matrix and texture
- Have an irregular individual silhouette
- Can be delicate around points and edges
- Suit earthy, collector-style displays
Polished crystals
- Have smooth surfaces that are easy to handle
- Offer predictable shapes for styling
- Make colour bands, veils and rainbows easier to see
- Include towers, spheres, freeforms, hearts and palm stones
Does polishing change the meaning?
In traditional practice, meaning is usually linked to the material. Shape changes how someone uses and displays it, but polishing does not remove the stone’s identity.

Care
Use a soft dry brush for raw pieces and a soft cloth for polished surfaces. Protect both from drops and strong chemicals.

More questions before you choose
Does raw mean untreated?
Not by itself. Raw describes the presentation. Ask separately about treatment, repairs and preparation if those facts matter to your purchase.
Does polished mean synthetic?
No. Polishing is a finishing process and does not by itself identify the material as natural or synthetic. Read the material disclosure rather than inferring origin from the finish.
